Apple Launches $599 MacBook Neo

Apple has introduced a new affordable laptop called the MacBook Neo, making it the company’s cheapest new MacBook ever. The device starts at $599 and is designed to attract students, first-time buyers, and users who normally choose budget laptops like Chromebooks or Windows PCs.

The announcement was made during an event in New York, where Apple described the MacBook Neo as a completely new product created to reach more customers in the price-sensitive laptop market. Pre-orders for the device have started, and it will be available in stores from March 11.

First MacBook Using an iPhone Chip

The MacBook Neo is the first Apple laptop powered by the A18 Pro processor, the same chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro. This is the first time Apple has used a smartphone chip to run a Mac computer.

Experts say this shows Apple’s advantage of controlling both hardware and software. Because the company designs its own processors and operating systems, it can run its Mac software efficiently even on chips originally built for phones.

Designed for Budget Buyers

Compared with other MacBook models, the MacBook Neo has some simplified features to keep the price lower. It includes a smaller display, 8GB of unified memory, and new bright color options, including a “citrus” yellow finish.

Although the laptop does not include a touchscreen like many Windows devices, it may attract buyers who want a traditional laptop experience instead of a tablet.

Competing With Chromebooks and Windows PCs

The new laptop directly targets devices running Google ChromeOS and Microsoft Windows, which dominate the lower-cost laptop market. Analysts say the MacBook Neo could become popular among college students and young users who want a Mac but cannot afford higher-priced models.

It could also help Apple expand its presence in schools and classrooms, where Chromebooks are widely used.

Apple’s Position in the PC Market

Despite its strong brand, Apple is not the largest computer manufacturer. According to market data, Lenovo leads the global PC market with about 27.2% share, while Apple holds roughly 9.4%.

However, Apple’s strategy has traditionally focused on premium devices and tight integration with other products like the Apple Watch and iPhone.

Launch Comes During Tough Market Conditions

The laptop industry is currently facing challenges due to a shortage of memory components and rising costs linked to demand from artificial intelligence data centers.

Analysts expect PC prices to rise in the coming years, while global PC shipments could decline. In this environment, launching a lower-priced laptop could help Apple gain additional market share.

Apple also introduced updated versions of its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models this week. The MacBook Neo, however, stands out as the company’s most affordable entry into the Mac lineup, potentially bringing many new users into Apple’s ecosystem.
