US Cuts Tariffs on Bangladesh, Offers Relief to Garment Industry

US Bangladesh tariff deal
US Cuts Tariffs on Bangladesh, Offers Relief to Garment Industry

The United States has announced a new trade deal with Bangladesh that will reduce import taxes and support the country’s garment industry. Under the agreement, the US has cut tariffs on Bangladeshi goods by 1%, bringing them down from 20% to 19%.

The deal also allows zero tariffs on some clothing and textile products, mainly those made using materials from the United States.

Big Support for Bangladesh’s Garment Sector

The garment industry is the main source of income for Bangladesh. It makes up more than 80% of the country’s exports and gives jobs to around four million people. Bangladesh is the second-largest clothing exporter in the world, after China.

Lower US tariffs will help Bangladeshi clothes become cheaper and more competitive in the American market.

Zero Tariff Linked to US Raw Materials

The US government said it will allow certain Bangladeshi garments to enter the US without any tariff. But this benefit depends on one condition.

Bangladesh must use US-made cotton and man-made fibers. The more raw materials Bangladesh buys from the US, the more garments it can export at zero duty.

Bangladesh Opens Market to US Products

In return, Bangladesh has agreed to open its market to more American goods. These include:

  • Agricultural products like soy and meat
  • Chemicals
  • Medical devices
  • Car parts

Bangladesh will also accept US safety and quality standards, making it easier for American products to be sold in the country.

Trade Numbers Show Large Gap

In 2024:

  • Bangladesh exported about $8.4 billion worth of goods to the US
  • Bangladesh imported around $2.2 billion from the US

The US says the tariff changes are meant to reduce this trade gap.

Many well-known US brands buy clothes from Bangladesh, such as Levi Strauss, Fruit of the Loom, Vans, Timberland, and The North Face.

Political Situation in Bangladesh

The deal comes at an important time. Bangladesh is preparing for general elections, and the country is currently run by an interim government formed after political unrest in 2024.

Bangladesh Close to India in US Tariffs

After the new cut, Bangladesh now faces a 19% US tariff, close to India’s 18% tariff. Both countries compete strongly in clothing and footwear exports.

Earlier, Bangladesh faced tariffs as high as 37%, which were later reduced after talks with the US.

What Leaders Say

Interim leader Muhammad Yunus said the agreement will start once both sides complete official steps. Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser said the zero-tariff plan will give a strong boost to the garment industry.

The new US-Bangladesh trade deal is a win for both sides. Bangladesh gets better access to the US market, while the US sells more raw materials and products. The agreement is expected to support jobs, exports, and economic recovery in Bangladesh.
