Search for Nancy Guthrie Intensifies After Masked Suspect Video Released

The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of TV journalist Savannah Guthrie, has taken a serious turn after police released new surveillance video and confirmed the first detention in the case.

Nancy disappeared from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on the night of January 31. Authorities believe she was taken by force. The case has drawn national attention and strong public reaction.

Masked Man Seen Outside Her Home

On Tuesday, the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released video from a doorbell camera outside Nancy Guthrie’s home.

The video shows a man wearing a ski mask, gloves, and a backpack. A gun can be seen in a holster. He approaches the front door in the early hours of February 1, around the time Nancy is believed to have been abducted.

In the video, the man appears to cover the camera with plants before damaging it. Police said the camera stopped working shortly before 2 a.m.

About 30 minutes later, Nancy’s pacemaker device disconnected from her phone. Investigators believe this may be linked to the time she was taken.

Officials said the video was recovered from digital storage that was not accessible earlier.

Blood Found on the Porch

Police previously confirmed that blood found on Nancy’s front porch matched her DNA.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said the evidence suggests she was taken from the home by force.

Family members have said Nancy has limited mobility and serious health problems. She depends on daily medication for her heart and lives in constant pain.

“She needs her medicine to survive,” Savannah Guthrie said in an emotional video message shared online.

Authorities have warned that without her medication, her health could quickly become critical.

Man Detained and Released

Hours after the video was released, deputies stopped and detained a man during a traffic stop south of Tucson.

Police later searched a home in Rio Rico, near the Mexico border. The man was questioned in connection with the investigation but was later released.

The man, identified only as Carlos, told reporters he does not know Nancy Guthrie and has nothing to do with her disappearance.

A woman who identified herself as his mother-in-law said police searched her house after receiving a tip. She said there was “nothing to hide.”

So far, no one has been officially charged in the case.

Ransom Notes but No Proof of Life

Investigators are also looking into ransom notes that were reportedly sent to media outlets. The notes included deadlines, but officials have not confirmed if they are real.

There has been no confirmed proof that Nancy Guthrie is alive.

Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have posted several videos asking for help. In one message, Savannah shared the masked suspect video and said, “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.”

The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information.

Deepfake Technology Creates New Problems

As the search continues, officials face another challenge — deepfake technology.

Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to create fake videos or audio that look and sound real. Experts say that even if someone sends a video showing Nancy speaking, it cannot be trusted right away.

Investigators now have to carefully examine digital evidence. They must check video details, sound patterns, and technical data before confirming if something is real.

Authorities have already dealt with false leads and fake ransom demands. These false claims waste time and make the investigation harder.

White House Monitoring the Case

The case has reached the highest levels of government.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump reviewed the surveillance footage. She urged anyone with information to contact the FBI.

Federal authorities are working with local police in the investigation.

Investigation Still Ongoing

Police say they are following several leads. FBI agents have been seen going door to door in nearby neighborhoods asking for information.

Despite new video evidence and a detention, Nancy Guthrie’s location remains unknown.

As the Nancy Guthrie abduction investigation continues, her family is asking for one thing — help in bringing her home safely.
