Talks between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme are set to begin in Geneva. US President Donald Trump said he will take part “indirectly” in the discussions.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said the talks are “very important.” He also said he believes Iran now wants to make a deal.
“I’ll be involved in those talks, indirectly,” Trump said.
US Sends More Military Forces to the Region
The talks are starting at a time of rising tension. The United States has sent more military forces to the Middle East.
Satellite images confirmed that the USS Abraham Lincoln is near Iran. Reports also say that the USS Gerald R Ford is on its way to the region. It is known as the world’s largest warship.
US officials told Reuters that the American military is preparing for possible long military action if the talks fail. More destroyers, combat ships, and fighter jets have also been moved to the area.
This shows that while talks are happening, the US is also ready for stronger action.
Trump Warns Iran About “Consequences”
President Trump said Iran knows what can happen if there is no agreement. He spoke about last summer, when the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites after earlier talks failed.
“We could have had a deal instead of sending the B-2s,” Trump said, referring to US stealth bombers. He added that he does not think Iran wants to face those consequences again.
Before the US joined Israel in striking Iranian nuclear sites in June, talks had stopped because of a key disagreement. The US wants Iran to stop uranium enrichment inside its country. Washington believes enrichment could lead to nuclear weapons.
Iran Wants a “Fair Deal”
Iran has said it is ready to talk but will not accept threats.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said he is in Geneva to reach a “fair and equitable deal.” However, he made it clear that Iran will not give in to pressure.
Iran says the meeting, which is being mediated by Oman, will focus on its nuclear programme and the possible lifting of US sanctions. The US has also said it wants to discuss Iran’s missile programme.
Iran Holds Military Drills
At the same time, Iran has shown its own military strength.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps carried out a maritime drill in the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil shipments.
Iran’s civil defense organisation also held a chemical defense drill in the Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in southern Iran. This area is a major energy hub for the country.
These drills show that Iran is also preparing for any possible conflict.
Deal Possible but Difficult
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said reaching an agreement will be very difficult, but there is still a chance for diplomacy.
The US has also sent envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner to support the talks.
For now, both sides are talking again. But with military forces ready on both sides, the situation remains serious. The world will be watching closely to see if the talks lead to peace or more tension.
