Google has officially introduced the new Google Pixel 10a, and at first glance, it looks very similar to last year’s model. The new A-series phone keeps its $499 price tag and focuses on small improvements instead of major changes.
The Pixel 10a is now available for preorder, and official sales begin in early March. While the upgrades are modest, Google is positioning the device as one of the best smartphones under $500.
A Cleaner, Completely Flat Design
One of the biggest visible changes is the design. The Pixel 10a now has a fully flat backside. The small camera module sits flush with the back panel, meaning the phone no longer rocks when placed on a table.
This design builds on last year’s Google Pixel 9a, which removed the large camera bar seen in older Pixel models but still had a slight bump. With the Pixel 10a, Google has refined the look even further.
On the front, the 6.3-inch display has slightly thinner and more even black bezels, giving the phone a cleaner appearance.
The phone comes in four colors: Obsidian, Fog, Lavender, and a new Berry shade. Google has also introduced matching Berry and Fog color options for its Pixel Buds 2a earbuds.
Display Gets Brighter and More Durable
The Pixel 10a features a 6.3-inch pOLED display with a 60-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels.
While the screen size remains unchanged, brightness has improved. It can now reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, compared to 2,700 nits on the Pixel 9a.
The display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, replacing the older Gorilla Glass 3. This upgrade should improve scratch resistance and overall durability.
Same Processor, Same Memory
Inside, the Pixel 10a continues to use the Google Tensor G4, paired with 8GB of RAM. Storage options remain 128GB and 256GB.
Interestingly, Google did not move to the newer Tensor G5 chip used in the flagship Pixel 10 series. When asked about the decision, Google said it had to make “trade-offs” to keep the price at $499. The company did not provide specific details, but rising memory costs across the industry may have influenced the choice.
Because the processor and RAM remain unchanged, real-world performance is expected to be similar to the Pixel 9a.
Battery and Charging Improvements
The Pixel 10a keeps the same 5,100mAh battery capacity. However, charging speeds have improved:
- 30W wired charging (up from 23W)
- 10W wireless charging (up from 7.5W)
The phone does not support Qi2 magnetic charging, a feature introduced in Google’s flagship Pixel 10 lineup.
Google has also continued its Battery Health Assistance system, which helps extend battery lifespan by managing voltage after many charge cycles. The device uses a new “pull jacket” mechanism to make battery removal easier for repairs.
Camera Hardware Stays the Same
There are no hardware changes to the camera system. The Pixel 10a includes:
- 48-megapixel main camera
- 13-megapixel ultrawide camera
- 13-megapixel front camera
While the hardware is unchanged, Google is focusing on new AI software tools to improve the camera experience.
New AI Camera Features
Google is bringing several software features from its flagship models to the Pixel 10a.
These include:
- Camera Coach, which suggests ways to improve your photos
- Auto Best Take, which merges group photos so everyone looks their best
- Macro Focus
- Satellite SOS for emergency communication without network coverage
Despite having the same Tensor G4 chip, these features are not currently available on the Pixel 9a. Google has not confirmed whether they will arrive later through software updates.
The phone also supports Quick Share, allowing easier file sharing across devices, including iPhones. Many Gemini AI features are included as well.
Long-Term Software Support
Google promises seven years of software updates for the Pixel 10a, matching its flagship devices. This long update period remains one of the strongest advantages of the Pixel A-series.
Sustainability Focus
Google says the Pixel 10a uses more recycled materials than any previous A-series model. The aluminum frame is made from 100 percent recycled material, and the back panel contains 81 percent recycled plastic. Recycled cobalt, copper, gold, and tungsten are also used in the device.
Is the Pixel 10a Worth Buying?
The Pixel 10a is not a major upgrade over the Pixel 9a. In fact, the differences are small. Most of the hardware remains the same, and performance should feel similar.
However, it still offers:
- A bright and smooth display
- Reliable cameras
- Long software support
- Solid battery life
- AI-powered features
- IP68 water and dust resistance
At $499, it remains one of the strongest mid-range smartphones available in the United States.
For some buyers, waiting for discounts on the Pixel 9a might make sense. But for those who want the latest version with improved durability, faster charging, and new AI tools, the Pixel 10a remains a strong option.
A full review will reveal how it performs in daily use, but based on early impressions, Google has once again delivered a safe and practical choice in the mid-range market.
