Deadly Winter Storm Brings Snow, Ice, and Extreme Cold Across the US

A strong winter storm has hit a large part of the United States, causing heavy snow, icy roads, and freezing temperatures. Millions of people are dealing with power cuts, travel problems, and dangerous cold weather.

The storm affected states from Texas to New York and even parts of Canada. Weather officials say the cold will continue for several days, and another storm could arrive soon.

Heavy Snow and Ice Cause Major Problems

The storm dropped thick snow across many cities and towns. Some places received more than one foot of snow. Ice also covered roads and power lines, making travel unsafe.

New York City received over 11 inches of snow. Boston and nearby areas saw even more. In New Mexico, some regions were buried under nearly 30 inches of snow.

Many roads became slippery and dangerous. Several states declared emergencies and asked people to stay indoors.

Deaths Reported in Several States

Officials confirmed that at least 18 people have died because of the storm. Some died due to cold exposure, while others were involved in winter-related accidents.

In Texas, a teenage girl died during a sledding accident. In Arkansas, another young person died after an ATV accident on icy ground. In Pennsylvania, several people died while shoveling snow.

In New York City and southern states, people died due to extreme cold and hypothermia. Local leaders asked residents to report anyone seen outside who may need help.

Power Cuts Leave Thousands Without Heat

The storm damaged power lines in many areas. As a result, hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses lost electricity.

Tennessee was one of the worst-hit states, with over 200,000 people without power at one point. Emergency shelters received many calls from residents who had no heat and no light.

Officials warned that staying without power in such cold weather can be dangerous.

Flights Cancelled Across the Country

Air travel was badly affected by the storm. More than 12,000 flights were cancelled in one day, the highest number in years.

The next day, thousands more flights were delayed or cancelled. Many airports are still trying to return to normal operations. Officials say full recovery may take several days.

Extreme Cold to Continue, More Storms Possible

Even though the storm is moving away, very cold air is spreading across the country. Nearly 200 million Americans are under cold weather warnings.

Weather experts also say another winter storm may hit later this week. It could bring more snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.

Communities Help Each Other During the Storm

Despite the harsh conditions, many people stepped in to help others. Volunteers offered rides, warm food, and shelter to those stuck in the cold.

In some cities, families enjoyed sledding and snowball fights. Still, officials warned people to remain careful, avoid travel, and follow safety instructions.
