The Trump Cummings War

And now a new battle begins in the US, it is the Trump Cummings war. US President Donald Trump said on Twitter, on Saturday, “Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous.” And perhaps that was the start of a new war in America.

Who Is Elijah Cummings?

Mr. Cummings, chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and is a veteran Maryland Democrat. Recently, during a congressional hearing, he confronted Kevin McAleenan, Homeland Security Secretary, about conditions at the border, for families and kids, saying, “What does that mean when a child is sitting in their own feces, can’t take a shower? Come on man, what’s that about? None of us would have our children in that position.” This was in response to a comment made by Mr. McAleenan, stating that given the huge influx of immigrants, the authorities were doing their “level best”.

This was when the US President responded with his remark as said above, to which Mr. Cummings responded, to Mr. Trump, saying, “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

The US President Further Tweeted

Mr. Cummings’s district “is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there.”

What People Have To Say About Trump’s Tweets

Bernard C. “Jack” Young, Democrat and Baltimore Mayor, said, “It’s completely unacceptable for the political leader of our country to denigrate a vibrant American City like Baltimore, and to viciously attack U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, a patriot and a hero.”

Ms. Klacik, a member of the 28-member Baltimore County Republican Central Committee, Tweeted on Saturday morning, “West Baltimore is filled with trash thanks to dumping. A problem city officials should have addressed years ago.”

Incidentally, Baltimore is one of the most violent cities in America, with the percentage of homicides rising to 18% over last year. Compared to last year, in the Western District of the police department, both nonfatal shootings and homicides were up by 50%.

Racist Comments By The US President?

Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Chair of the House Oversight Committee, voiced support for Cummings and said, “We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.”

Donald Trump Orders Investigation

The US president advocated an investigation saying, “Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!”

And Cummings Retaliates

“I’m begging the American people to pay attention to what is going on. Because if you want to have a democracy intact for your children, and your children’s children, and generations yet unborn we’ve got to guard this moment … This is our watch.”
