Monday night, when customers use a lot of power, electricity consumption reached more than 7800 megawatts in British Columbia, a record for a summer season, said BC Hydro.
This strong demand was responding to a heat wave. Fans and air conditioners have been widely used and refrigerators have consumed more electricity to maintain their temperature.
The previous summer record dates from August 28, 2017 with more than 7,500 megawatts consumed.
According to BC Hydro, the use of air conditioners has more than tripled since 2001 and this upward trend is expected to continue as a quarter of British Columbians plan to purchase one this summer.
On January 3, 2017, BC Hydro recorded the highest energy consumption at 10,194 megawatts.
