7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Myanmar, Shakes Thailand, Rescue Efforts Underway

On Friday 28 March, Earthquake of 7.7 Magniktude strucks to Mynmar, which caused widespread destruction all over the country. The earthquake, which hit northwest of Sagaing city, has death count of at least 1,644 people, with more than 3,400 peoples got injured. Many buildings, roads, and bridges have collapsed, making rescue efforts difficult. The damaged roads are slowing down the aid distribution, and leaving many affected areas in urgent need of help.

Authorities of Myanmar government acknowledged the extent of disaster and they have opened the doors for international help. Many social groups are working to provide food, water, and medical aid to those affected areas. But somehow, because of destruction many areas still unreachable.

High-Rise Collapse Raises Raises Safety Concerns in Bangkok

The effect of earthquake was also felt in Thialand, caused strong shaking in Bangkok and nearby areas. A 33 storey high-rise building collapsed, which was under construction near Chatuchak Market. At lease 10 dies and several others got injured. Experts already warned that many buildings in Bangkok may not built to survive in strong earthquakes, which raising concerns about structural safety in the city

Thailand’s Structural Engineers Association has highlighted that less than 10% of Bangkok’s buildings are designed to handle earthquakes. While newer buildings follow updated safety laws, older high-rises remain at risk. Bangkok’s soft soil also worsens the impact of tremors, increasing the chances of structural damage.

India and Thailand Step Up Rescue Efforts

Following the earthquake incident, India was the first country to send aid and teams to rescue in Myanmar. Indian government “Operation Brahma”, has sent over 137 tonnes of relied materials, which includes food, medicines and rescue equipment. India’s NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) also arrived in Myanmar to assist in search and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, Thailand has deployed emergency response teams to affected areas, including robotic mules to help in rescue efforts. The Thai government has also released emergency helpline numbers for foreign tourists who may need assistance. Authorities have assured that transportation and essential services in Bangkok and other cities are operating normally, despite initial disruptions.

Ongoing Efforts and Future Challenges

Rescue operations are still underway in both Myanmar and Thailand. While immediate aid is being provided, long-term challenges remain. Rebuilding homes, infrastructure, and ensuring future buildings are earthquake-resistant will require significant efforts. The earthquake has also sparked discussions on improving safety regulations for high-rise buildings, particularly in cities like Bangkok.

As the affected countries continue their recovery efforts, international support remains crucial. Aid organizations and governments around the world are stepping in to help, hoping to bring relief to those impacted by this tragic disaster.
