Russian Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv Suburbs Kills 1
Loud explosions were heard in Kyiv early Sunday after officials warned about a possible ballistic missile attack. Soon after the air alert, Russia launched a missile and drone strike on areas around the capital, killing one person.
The city’s military administration issued the alert shortly before 2:00 GMT. People were told to go to shelters immediately. Minutes later, several blasts were heard across the city and nearby suburbs.
Ukraine’s Emergency Service said one person died in the Kyiv region during the attack. Rescue teams saved eight people from under broken buildings, including one child.
The strike caused damage and fires in five districts around Kyiv — Obukhiv, Brovary, Boryspil, Bucha and Fastiv.
In the village of Putrivka in Fastiv district, rescue workers searched through rubble to save people trapped inside damaged homes.
Officials also asked residents not to record or share videos of air defence activity for safety reasons.
Regional authorities said air defence units were working to stop drones flying over the wider Kyiv area. There were no immediate details about how many missiles or drones were used.
There were also no full reports yet about the number of injured people.
Kyiv has been regularly attacked since Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia also attacked energy infrastructure in the southern Odesa region. The strike caused large fires, but emergency teams later put them out.
In recent months, Russia has increased attacks on Ukraine’s power grid. These strikes have left many people without electricity and heating during cold winter days.
Last month, Russia agreed to a request from US President Donald Trump to stop air strikes on Kyiv until February 1 because of severe winter weather. Ukraine said it was ready to respond in the same way.
However, after February 1, both sides started attacks again. Talks supported by the United States have not made much progress, except for some prisoner exchanges.
Nearly four years into the war, civilians in Kyiv and other regions continue to face missile and drone attacks.
Authorities are still checking the full damage from the latest strike. Rescue work is ongoing, and officials say the situation remains serious.
