North Korea Fires Missiles Into Sea During US–South Korea Military Talks

North Korea fired several missiles into the sea on Tuesday, causing concern in the region. The missile launch happened while the United States and South Korea were holding talks about their military cooperation against North Korea.

South Korea’s military said the missiles were launched from an area near Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. The launch took place at around 3:50 p.m. local time. The missiles traveled about 350 kilometers before falling into the sea on the country’s east side.

Japan Also Detects the Launch

Japan’s coast guard said it detected objects that looked like ballistic missiles launched by North Korea. These missiles fell into the sea a few minutes later.

Japanese officials said the missiles reached a height of about 80 kilometers. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the missiles did not cause any danger to Japan.

Strong Reaction From South Korea and Japan

South Korea strongly criticized the missile launch. The Office of National Security said the action was a serious provocation and broke United Nations rules. South Korea asked North Korea to stop all missile testing immediately.

Japan also condemned the launch. Officials said repeated missile tests by North Korea threaten peace in Japan, nearby countries, and the world. Japan filed a strong protest and warned that such actions put public safety at risk.

Missiles Linked to Nuclear Program

In recent months, North Korea has tested many short-range missiles and rocket systems. The country says these weapons are part of its defense plan and are meant to protect it from threats from the United States and South Korea.

These missiles have drawn more attention after reports that North Korea supplied similar weapons to Russia. The weapons were reportedly used in the Ukraine war under a defense agreement signed in 2024.

Launch Happens During US Defense Visit

The missile test happened while a senior US defense official was visiting South Korea. During the visit, the US and South Korea discussed changes to their military alliance.

The United States is looking at ways to modernize its role while still supporting South Korea’s defense. The missile launch is seen as a warning from North Korea during these talks.
