Trump Warns of 200% Duty on French Wine as Ties With Macron Sour
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wines and champagne, escalating tensions with France after reports suggested that French President Emmanuel Macron may refuse to join Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace” focused on Gaza.
The sharp warning came during a media interaction in Miami, where Trump responded to questions about Macron’s reported decision. Trump dismissed the French leader’s political standing and said trade penalties would be used if France acted in a “hostile” manner.
Speaking to reporters, Trump openly linked the tariff threat to Macron’s reluctance to take a seat on the board.
“Well, nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon,” Trump said. “If they feel like being hostile, I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join.”
Macron’s current five-year term is set to end in May 2027, and French law does not allow him to run for a third term.
The comments reflect Trump’s long-standing approach of using tariffs as leverage in diplomatic disputes, particularly with allies.
The Board of Peace is described as a global body backed by the United Nations Security Council, approved in November last year. Its role is to oversee the Israel–Hamas ceasefire and help manage stability in Gaza.
Invitations to join the board were reportedly sent to several global leaders, including:
France has not officially confirmed its final decision, but reports suggest Paris is unwilling to join under the current framework.
Alongside the tariff threat, Trump also reignited controversy by repeating his desire for the United States to control Greenland, a territory that belongs to Denmark.
“I don’t think they’re going to push back too much,” Trump said, referring to European leaders. “We have to have it. They can’t protect it.”
Trump argued that Denmark’s long history in Greenland does not amount to ownership, making a vague reference to historical exploration.
“Just because the boat went there 500 years ago and then left, that doesn’t give you title to property,” he said, without clarifying which historical event he meant.
Denmark established colonies in Greenland in 1721 and formally made it part of the country in 1953. In 2009, Greenland was granted self-government, giving it control over most domestic matters, while Denmark retained authority over foreign policy and defense.
Despite this, Trump has repeatedly claimed Greenland is essential for global and Arctic security, citing future threats from rival powers.
Trump has also warned that the United States could impose tariffs of up to 25% on eight European countries, including the UK, until the U.S. gains control over Greenland.
He has not ruled out using military force, although U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly said earlier this month that Trump would prefer to purchase Greenland rather than seize it.
European countries are now reportedly discussing retaliatory tariffs and broader economic countermeasures if the U.S. follows through on its threats.
The developments have raised concerns about renewed trade disputes between the U.S. and Europe, along with growing uncertainty over transatlantic relations.
Trump’s remarks on France, Gaza, and Greenland have added to a series of confrontational statements that challenge traditional diplomatic norms. Public trade threats and territorial claims have unsettled allies and sparked debate across Europe.
As the situation unfolds, global markets and political observers will be watching closely to see whether the tariff threats turn into policy—or remain part of escalating rhetoric.
