Alberta firefighter dies fighting Ontario blaze

An Alberta firefighter died suddenly in northwestern Ontario while helping local firefighters.

According to a statement from Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s office, Jerry Gadwa, a resident of Kehewin, was fighting forest fires near Red Lake, 100 km from the Manitoba border.

Ms. Notley conveyed her condolences to Mr. Gadwa’s family and friends. She recalled the sacrifices firefighters make to protect the population.

A spokeswoman for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed that there had been a death and said an investigation had been opened, but did not elaborate.

Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Jeff Yurek also released a news release.
